Symbolism v. Substance: Gore v. Pickens

Famous oilman T. Boone Pickens, who has invested millions and millions of dollars of his own cash in alternative energy, has mapped out a strategy to cut the U.S. dependence on foreign oil by over 33%, while at the same time reducing co2 emissions.

Al Gore, Pontiff Maximus of the Holy Church of Global Warming™, continues to stomp all over the world with his Bruhathkayosaur-sized carbon footprint, giving speeches to the SUV-driving champagne socialists, and telling them, nay all of us, that we need to accept personal responsibility for our carbon sins, while accepting a centrally planned world economy where carbon-indulgences are the new global currency as the final solution to the CLIMATE CRISIS!1!!1!.

One axiom that guides my life: "Beware the zealot."

Yeah, Pickens is looking to make a buck-so what? This is America. That's what we do here.

But at least Pickens isn't trying to tell you that he is doing this out of the goodness of his heart, and trying to make you feel guilty for driving a car that gets under 40mpg.

Now THIS is change I can believe in.

I've been on Pickens' bandwagon for awhile now. The major mistake Gore is making is assuming everyone does or will care about global warming. Moron. You frame it as a national security crisis and that we're currently in danger, existing at the whim of radical nutjobs in the middle east. Wind + solar = American freedom and return to glory. THAT will win hearts and minds.

I saw this black leader on Tavis Smiley talk about how he wants to convince people (well, his people) that Green means green, as in Benjamins. He went on and on about the money making opportunities and new jobs and industries that will arise and that people (his people) need to get in on that. Once again, THAT is the message you present to America. Explain to them how you can make a buck, and people will get behind it.

Also, Americans may think polar bears and seals are cute, but they'll club a baby seal to save a $1 a gallon on gas. Gore needs to learn that.

What's funny is that from reading the liberal blogs, the reason they distrust Pickens (he's a capitalist oilhitlerman) and trust Gore (he parrots their political ideology) is the same reason that I trust Pickens and distrust Gore.

The MoD said to me the other day that he was really pissed that when somebody finally comes up with a real, workable plan, and is willing to invest billions of dollars in it, the left/libs try to shoot it down because he's an evil capitalist who made his money on *gasp* oil.

What are you reading? I haven't heard any of that.

Here's the problem - most of the Republicans, McCain included, are in the pocket of Big Oil. Obama is in the pocket of corn and ethanol. Neither one of them is going near that guy. It's all bullshit.

The lefties and the righties are all gullible asses, getting played by politicians in each party. Nobody questions anything, thinks outside their little bubbles, or have a firm grasp of reality.

The smart candidate would seize on this windmill thing, and play up how Gawd clearly has blessed America with that natural wind current right in the heartland, so it's meant to be. Of course you gotta love that it's in the heartland, too. You get the lefties on board because you're saving the environment, the evangelicals eat up the god shit, and middle America finds newfound pride in itself. Win all around! Oh yeah, and you might get some big money backers from both Hollywood and smart fucks like Pickens who see there's some money to be made here. Fuck, I should be running someone's campaign.

What have I been reading? Maybe I spend too much time "reading" far-left blogs where anybody to the right of Marx = Hitler.

I suppose that since radicals scream the loudest, it's hard to hear the moderates.

For example:

Your analysis is spot-on, BTW.

I have to admit, the natural gas to fuel the cars thing has sounded spacey to me. I don't get that. Like it or not hippies, coal is going to be here for awhile. We're sitting on tons of it and mining it doesn't endanger spotted owls or anything, just the guys dumb enough to go mine it. The talk about the environment is really a waste of time. While we're curbing emissions, the Chinese, Russians and Indians are belching thick black plumes of death into the air.

First and foremost has to be get off foreign oil, not save the environment. Somehow you have to get Americans to WANT to use less gas and drive less and suffer a bit to make some new options work, like the sacrifices and rationing during WWII. Because of that, higher gas prices are in an odd way good, but I'd rather a better motivator, a sense of purpose and higher motivation, but maybe that's the dreamy lefty in me. ;)
