As usual, I was outside smoking with the boss today, and a couple of IT guys came out to our little paddock to relax in the post-storm air, and I overheard this tidbit:
“Talk about conservative to liberal. I mean, I thought Westport (the Haight-Ashbury of KC) was like the most liberal place in the world. I thought I was a liberal. When I flew into SanFran and got off the plane, just outside the terminal there were these bum hippies right out of the 60’s, except they were also like in their 60’s, with dirty tie-dye shirts and long white beards and hair asking for hand-outs, and one even said he needed $20 for some weed.”
“Well, my sister picks me up in her beat-up Insight, and we start the drive up to Berkeley.”
“Man you got to go out there and see the bay and the city, it’s really amazing. She had to be back so she could to go event, but we took a detour through the city so I could see some of the landmarks from the movies and video games. Seriously, it’s worth the trip just to see that.”
“Okay, so we get up to Berkeley about dusk and her apartment is right off campus, but there’s like these knots of protesters all over the place
“My sister lives with this guy in a tiny one-bedroom apartment, and I slept on their futon while I was there. He seemed pretty cool, and she had been with him for a couple of years, but this was the first time I had met him.”
“It was pretty cool, we smoked, and did some shots, and listened to music. He was a real laid back guy. They left and said they would be back later, and I pretty much just passed out, I was so tired after working all day and the flight.”
“The next day, she wakes me up at like 2pm, and we head out to the campus for a tour. I see even more protesters now. I’m not kidding, there are these guys wearing designer ‘Che’ shirts and pants from Abercrombie and $100 sandals. These guys are yelling at the top of their lungs about the Iraq war and down with America and all that stuff. We were near one of the parking lots, and no-kidding, some kids got of a Mercedes wearing black watch-caps and anarchist “A” t-shirts, and one was wearing a red beret that had the Soviet hammer and sickle on it. Seriously.”
“I could tell by their pants and shoes that most of these people at least had access to money, because they all had on brand-name stuff, no matter how scruffy they tried to make themselves look. All of these protesters were trust-fund babies, driving $60,000 cars and wearing $100 shoes, while protesting against capitalism and America.”
“What the hell is wrong with these people? Don’t they know that in a socialist society, their wealth and possessions would be taken away?”
