Time Magazine Admits Bias, Arrogance



“I think since I’ve been back at the magazine, I have felt that one of the things that’s needed in journalism is that you have to have a point of view about things,” Stengel said. “You can’t always just say ‘on the one hand, on the other’ and you decide. People trust us to make decisions. We’re experts in what we do. So I thought, you know what, if we really feel strongly about something let's just say so.”

I don't think it's bias to have a point of view. I think the media bends over backwards too often to show two sides to everything often when there aren't two sides. Take for example Intelligent Design against Evolution. One has a body of evidence that backs it up, the other is not even a scientific principle that can be falsified. Why would anyone give equal time to both theories unless they have a bias against science?

When you write from a point of view, that is by definition bias.

This guy is saying that the public isn't smart enough to make their own decisions, and it's up to the media to tell the public what their opinion should be. Thats pretty arrogant.

I like the part where he says "We're experts at what we do." If Stengel was talking about disseminating propaganda, then yeah, I would have to agree with him there.

In fact, Noam Chomsky wrote a pretty good article about this about 10 years ago:
