In the last two weeks, over 600 earthquakes have been detected on the Juan de Fuca plate, and two quakes greater than Magnitude 5 have occurred off the Pacific Northwest coast in the last 48 hours.
Seismologists monitor this region closely, as megathrust earthquakes similar to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami occur every 300 to 900 years. The last such event, known as the Cascadia Earthquake, happened on January 26, 1700.
